Open it in a browser, or install it on the machine in front of you. Every build is the same library, the same engine and the same marks — there is no reduced edition among them.

PWA · no install

Open it and it works, including offline: the database is a full SQLite replica in the browser's own private file system. Install it from the address bar for an icon and a window of its own.

Windows

native · 10 and 11

A native application, not a browser in a frame. Adds the three things a tab cannot: a real .mcq file on disk with a proper Save-as, lockdown mode for an invigilated sitting, and seeing another Zayeed device on the same network so two machines sync with no server involved. One file — download it and run it; there is nothing to install.

Linux

native · any distribution

The same application as Windows, from the same source, with the same lockdown mode and the same direct sync between two machines on one network. One file and no package manager: chmod +x it and run it, on any 64-bit distribution.

Android

Writes papers as well as sitting them: same sets, same engine, same rules, same statistics, same certificates — and the pack’s on-screen keyboard, so an unsupported script is still answerable. Save and open a .mcq through the share sheet.

Preview build 0.1.0. These are real builds and they run, but Zayeed has not had a stable release. None of them is signed with a purchased certificate yet, so Windows SmartScreen and Android will both warn you the first time — and an unsigned executable that arrives on its own, with no installer around it, is exactly the shape SmartScreen is most suspicious of. Check the file against the checksum below rather than taking the warning as the last word. Signed builds replace these as each platform reaches release.

Running the Linux build

It arrives as .bin so that your browser saves it rather than offering to open it. Make it executable and run it:

Nothing is written outside your home directory and nothing needs root. Sound and film are played by whichever of mpv, ffplay or vlc is on the machine; the app looks for one before it lets an assessed paper with a recording in it open, and says so plainly when there is none.

Other builds

Installer packages — MSI for Group Policy estates, and .deb and .rpm, are not produced. The single executable above is the whole application and needs no privileges to run; if your estate requires a package in order to deploy it, ask.
ARM builds — not yet produced. The 64-bit Intel and AMD build above is the only one.
macOS — written but not bundled here. It is the same project with two more runtime identifiers, and a bundler that assembles the .app around it; the bundle itself has to be made on a Mac, because an executable bit and a signature do not survive being built anywhere else. Ask if you need one.
Server — only needed for sync, LTI and join-by-code, and supplied as a licensed package. See self-hosting.

Check what you downloaded

SHA-256, first sixteen characters. On Windows Get-FileHash <file>; on Linux and macOS shasum -a 256 <file>.

Or let the application do it. Open Account in the web app, the Windows or Linux build or the phone, find Is this download the real one?, and pick the file you downloaded: it is hashed on your own machine — nothing is uploaded — and checked against a signed list of everything the release contains, using a key compiled into the application rather than one fetched from this site.

What that check says today. The publisher key is published and pinned in every shell — key id b46538f1336eacf8 — so the check now passes for a genuine download and refuses an altered one. The manifest it reads is at /dl/release.json and the key’s public half at /dl/release-key.txt, if you would rather verify outside the application. The table below is still worth having, and it is worth being clear about what it proves: a hash printed on a page catches a damaged or truncated download, but it cannot catch a replaced one, because whoever can replace the file can replace the number printed beside it. That is what the signed list is for. Neither check attributes the file to a paid-for identity — that is a code-signing certificate, and none has been bought.

Licensing

Zayeed is closed source. The pricing page carries the list prices; there is no card checkout, so a licence is bought on an order form and invoiced. Want a build for an estate we have not listed, or an air-gapped deployment? Ask.
